Green Heritage and the Metropolis: Allotments, Urban Agriculture and Green Practices in the Suburbs

GreenHer analyzes the heritage dynamics of allotments and gardens located in European urban peripheries. It is based on the idea that gardens represent an important emerging heritage, contributing to the greening of the urban environment, greater biodiversity, to the mitigation of climate change, to food education, to the improvement of diet and food cultures, as well as neighborhood sociability in the neighborhood – offering a sense of belonging and mutual support. However, their lack of recognition as heritage sites and their location on the outskirts of metropolitan areas subject to land and property pressure make them vulnerable. In recent years, they have been the subject of social demands from local residents who are fighting for their preservation and conservation. Based on a comparative study of six urban & metropolitan peripheries (Paris, Madrid, Edinburgh, Bologna, Krakow, Leuven), the project studies these allotments and their emergence as a shared local heritage, and as an alternative scenario for metropolitan development, through the prism of their appropriation by local residents, in a context of pressures for urban redevelopment and densification. A hybrid meeting in Paris (with academic and non-academic stakeholders) on “Green Heritage and the Metropolis: Allotments, Urban Agriculture and Green Practices in the Suburbs” (21-22 April 2026) organized as follows: Research meeting of the partners (internal) (1rst half day); hybrid lectures (2nd and 3rd half day); hands-on activities (planting and gardening) in the Jardins des Vertus allotments (Aubervilliers, Paris) (4th half-day). A “garden festival” simultaneously organised in the gardens of each of the 6 cities, in the framework of the European Heritage days, in September 2026. The garden festival aims to give a positive boost to the development of leisure, cultural and educational visits to the allotments of the urban peripheries.
