Microscale Ocean Biophysics 8.0

27 mai-5 juin 2026
The conference will take place in the "Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques" of Cargèse situated on the west coast of Corsica. It is a wonderful place for staying, due to its exceptional geographic environment. - Cargèse, Corsica. (France)

This interdisciplinary symposium will explore the biophysics of microscale marine processes, highlighting how interactions between marine microorganisms and their physicochemical environment at very small scales fundamentally shape ocean dynamics at the global level. Building on seminal insights that called for studying the ocean at the millimetre scale, the meeting emphasizes the role of microscale heterogeneity and biophysical interactions in microbial ecology. Key topics include nutrient uptake by diffusion, encounter rates driven by flow and motility, chemical signaling shaped by turbulence and advection, and the physics of locomotion in low-Reynolds-number regimes. Recent advances in experimental techniques, in situ observations, and theoretical and numerical modeling now make it possible to investigate these processes with unprecedented detail. By bringing together oceanographers, biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, and mathematicians, the colloquium aims to foster cross-disciplinary dialogue and promote a renewed focus on the physical microenvironment of individual organisms as a cornerstone for understanding marine ecosystems. Practically, the meeting will last 10 days. It is organized in two parts: a three-day workshop dedicated to learning standard experimental and numerical techniques and concepts in the field of ocean biophysics at micro-scale, followed by a week-long conference.
