Model-based clustering and classification provide a probabilistic framework for discovering structures in complex data and for assigning observations to latent groups. This master class will introduce the main ideas underlying (model-based) clustering and classification, with an emphasis on mixture models and their inference with the Expectation Maximization algorithm. The course will be primarily lecture-based, interleaved with illustrative demonstrations in R.
