International Symposium on Social and Solidarity Economy, Artificial Intelligence, and Health: New Horizons for Territorial Development
13-14 nov. 2025
Mohamed First University, Oujda Maroc - Oujda (Maroc)
Context
The year 2025, declared the International Year of Cooperatives, offers a unique opportunity to
emphasize the essential role of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) in generating employment
and promoting decent work. SSE continues to demonstrate resilience during crises, expand social
protection, and foster inclusive dialogue across diverse communities worldwide.
In Canada, more than 30% of the population is involved in cooperatives. In Brazil, cooperatives
account for 75% of wheat production and 40% of milk production, with exports exceeding $1.3
billion annually. These examples highlight the socioeconomic value of SSE across various national
contexts.
Growing recognition from governments, universities, civil society, and international organizations
has led to the development of supportive policy frameworks aligned with the UN Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), especially those relating to poverty reduction, health, gender equality,
and decent work.
A New Dimension: AI, Health, and SSE
In today's fast-evolving digital age, Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands as a transformative force.
This symposium will explore how AI can complement the SSE to improve healthcare access,
strengthen community-based governance, and promote innovation that aligns with principles of
social equity.
Key questions:
- How can AI enhance the governance of cooperative health systems?
- What digital solutions can expand healthcare access in rural or underserved regions?
- How can we balance tech-driven innovation with social justice in community health policies?
General Objective
To spotlight the contributions of SSE to decent work, sustainable development, and social justice
in Morocco’s Oriental region, while integrating emerging dimensions such as digital
transformation and health innovation.
Specific Objectives
- Examine SSE’s concrete responses to employment, inequality, and exclusion.
- Identify innovative solutions driven by SSE in AI, health, and digital tools.
- Propose policy recommendations and collaborative strategies to strengthen local SSE
ecosystems.
