Since the work of I. Prigogine (Nobel Prize in Physics, 1977), it is well known that any dynamical system with spatial interaction and temporal dynamics is capable of spontaneous self-organization. Such a process, however, requires a clever balance between the energy injection and losses on the one hand and on the other hand between repulsive and attractive interactions. Over the decades following the aforementioned work, many advances in studies on the very origins of these ingredients have been carried out, leading to a great variety of patterns in almost all areas of the nonlinear science. Patterns which are all gathered under the concept of dissipative structures. The aim of this symposium is to bring together scientific personalities of international renown and, above all, of different fields of research whose past or current work has helped to establish universal tools and methods for the study of non-equilibrium dynamic systems. The goal is to reflect on new trends and perspectives in this area, in order to provide answers to new challenges such as the predictability and control of dynamic behaviors of complex systems.
