Ecole thématique:
We are pleased to inform you that the third thematic school, entitled “Conditionals in Paris - logic, linguistics, and cognition,” which is financially supported by CNRS and LABEX-EFL, will take place at INALCO (65 rue des Grands Moulins) in Paris on November 4–8, 2024. For thousands of years, philosophers and logicians have extensively examined conditional constructions, which take the form “if A then B,” in natural languages, and have made numerous profound insights regarding them. Nevertheless, we have not yet achieved a comprehensive understanding of them and their fundamental connection to the process of deducing B from A. In recent years, scholars in the fields of logic, linguistics, psychology, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence have shed new light on this area of research. The thematic school we are organizing will have a strong interdisciplinary focus, centering on the areas of linguistics, philosophical logic, and cognitive linguistics. While providing foundational instruction on conditional constructions to French researchers is the primary aim of the school, it is open to considering highly skilled researchers from any country. Prominent academics including Timothy Williamson (Oxford), Eve Sweetser (Berkeley), Chi-Hé Elder (East Anglia, UK), Michela Ippolito (Toronto), Rajesh Bhatt (Amherst), and Hans Rott (Regensburg) will comprise the school’s faculty. This comprehensive training program spanning five days will serve to promote the development and dissemination of research on conditional constructions. We look forward to welcoming all those who are interested in acquiring scientific knowledge and making valuable contributions to this research project in Paris.
