ARTificial Intelligence in Secure ApplicatioNs - Ecole Thématique ARTISAN

ARTISAN workshop (Role and effects of ARTificial Intelligence in Secure ApplicatioNs) tackles the issues related to Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning with regards to security and safety applications. In fact, the last years have witnessed an increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and especially machine learning (ML) techniques in many automated systems covering almost all the main domains of our lives. AI-based components have emerged in many industrial domains (e.g., Industry 4.0, aviation and flight control, automotive, medical), performing complex tasks such as pattern recognition, image recognition, and even control. However, most of the systems and functionalities in domains such as aviation, industrial automation and automotive have security-critical (and safety-critical, as the two properties are often highly connected) requirements.
The objective of this workshop is to illustrate what are the foundations, applications, benefits, misuse and related effects of Artificial Intelligence (AI) including Machine Learning (ML) in critical systems and infrastructures. ARTISAN explains Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to raise awareness that AI/ML is a double-edge sword which can either enhance security or expose novel security threats. In ARTISAN, AI/ML is addressed as i) a means to improve security of target systems and applications; ii) a means to attack applications; iii) an enabling technology that is beneficial to build innovative systems and applications, but that can expose itself novel vulnerabilities.
